Cheech Marin (born Richard Marin on July 13, 1946) and Tommy Chong (born May 24, 1938) first collaborated in the late 1960s after meeting in Vancouver, Canada. They began performing stand-up routines before releasing a series of comedy albums and films that turned them into cultural icons. Their debut album, Cheech and Chong (1971), was a success, but they achieved massive popularity with their 1978 film Up in Smoke, which became a cult classic. The film is credited with launching the stoner comedy genre and featured the duo as two hapless, marijuana-obsessed characters.
