Alzner was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Capitals during the 2008-2009 season and played for the team through the 2016-2017 season. During his time in Washington, he established himself as a solid, stay-at-home defenseman who excelled at penalty-killing and defensive play.
