Gartner was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Capitals and played for the team from the 1979-1980 season through the 1988-1989 season. During his time in Washington, Gartner established himself as one of the league's premier goal scorers and earned numerous All-Star selections.
