Carwin won the UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship by defeating Frank Mir at UFC 111 in March 2010. He won the fight by knockout in the first round. He then faced Brock Lesnar in a unification bout for the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 116 in July 2010. Despite a dominant first round, Carwin lost the fight via submission in the second round.
